Lithotripsy is a medical procedure that uses shock waves or a laser to break down the stone formations in the kidney, gallbladder, or ureter. During the procedure, the patient lies on top of a soft cushion or membrane through which the waves pass. About a couple thousand shock waves are required for completely crushing the stones. The complete treatment takes about 45-60 minutes. The unresolved particles of small stones (calcium deposits) will exit the body when a patient urinates. The main advantage of this non-invasive treatment is that doesn’t have any complications at all. In addition, it also saves time, hospital stays, and expenditure, and with no recovery time. However, Lithotripsy doesn’t work for all types kidney stones. The right specialist to consult for such a treatment is an experienced Nephrologist. The success rate for the treatment remains around 62-76%. A few possible side effects of Lithotripsy include severe pain from passing stone fragments, blocked urine flow if stone fragments block the urinary tract, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), etc.
